For the first time, Apple is offering two versions of its AirPods for the masses. The company has introduced the AirPods 4, starting at $129, and a premium model priced at $179 that features active noise cancellation in an open-style design. While other brands, like Samsung with their Galaxy Buds 3, have tried this approach, I'm eager to see how well Apple's version can handle city noise and airplane sounds without relying on silicone tips for an in-ear seal.
I just had a look at the AirPods 4 at Apple's event, and the earbuds themselves seem pretty similar to the previous model. However, Apple’s website mentions that the contours have been refined for a more secure fit. The charging case is now smaller and lighter than before. If you opt for the ANC version, the case supports wireless charging and features a speaker for Find My location tracking.
As Apple has gradually phased out the Lightning port it introduced 12 years ago, the AirPods have been among the last product lines to part ways with the proprietary connector. Last year, Apple launched a USB-C charging case for the AirPods Pro 2, offering an affordable way to upgrade the charging port without needing to replace the earbuds. However, AirPods Max users will need to completely replace their headphones to switch to USB-C. The new AirPods Max, available for preorder today in five new colors—midnight, starlight, blue, orange, and purple—are priced at $549 (the same as the previous model) and will be released on September 20th.
